This is where the real farm life shows up — the good, the messy, and everything in between. From daily routines and small wins to lessons learned the hard way, the Farm Journal is a place to share what’s actually happening behind the scenes. Some days go smoothly, and some don’t go as planned at all — but that’s all part of it.
Life here isn’t picture-perfect, and it’s not meant to be. It’s early mornings, late nights, figuring things out as we go, animals with their own ideas, and work that changes with the seasons. Some days we wonder why we’re doing it at all… and other days, we’re reminded exactly why we started. This space is just a running record of all of it — as it happens, honest and unfiltered.
This morning has been productive! Woke early with the sun.... and Jersey (our puppy). Had a cup of coffee and relaxed... tossed my milking jars in the oven for sterilizing... went out and fed the milking ladies... unloaded the dishwasher... had another coffee... assembled my milk machine... went out and milked Marble.. dealt with her milk... went out and milked Marcy... dealt with her milk... washed the milker... fed the dogs...
Meanwhile, my other half got up... had his coffee... fed the pigs.. watered the cows... let out and fed the chickens... put mom chicken and babies outside... put on the sprinkler... watered the cows... made himself a lunch... headed off to move irrigation lines....
After he left I made breakfast... cleaned up only part of my mess... then I made two 4oz. bottles of Rosemary Mist spray for hair... printed labels and stuck them on... took a photo... then I scooped the cream from 2 gallons of milk and popped it in the freezer... now I'm having a coffee and writing this note...
It's not yet halfway through the day, and I'm super stoked with what I've accomplished so far. It's a beautiful sunny day, and I'll be heading outside shortly!
Oh, how I despise ticks! A neighbor found 3 on himself a couple of days ago, and last evening I found one in my hair! UGH! We have 4 dogs, it could have come from them, or me when I was outside... It creeped my out, I squished it under the end of a butter knife. I have been itchy everywhere, every since! I will be on the hunt for a safe, natural spray repellent for the dogs and us - pop me an email if you have any suggestions!
It was a beautiful day today - sunny and warm! I had a giant nap this afternoon, as we had very little sleep last night. Jersey woke me up several times, not sure what that was about. I'd take her outside, and she'd just sit there... would hate to not take her out, if she had to pee... Husband was up at 2:30am for calf check - and then we must have had a predator come through the cows, as they woke us up hollaring! We've never heard them like that, it is crazy how momma cow's can be so agressive and loud when protecting their calves. Thank goodness nobody was hurt... we've got the window cracked tonight, so we can hear a bit better - it's very likely whoever was there last night, will be back. Fingers crossed that all will be well.
Hope everyone enjoyed their day, no matter what you were up to. Have a great night!
It's been busy around here - we have 7 new calves on the farm and a bunch left to arrive! With middle of the night checks on the ladies, and housetraining the pup, Jersey - we aren't getting quite the amount of sleep we're used to... It is however, COMPLETELY worth it.
I've only used my surge milker once... it was a bit fumbly... I need to do some adjusting - will give it another go tomorrow.
I have some exciting news next week - but will hold off on that, just in case it doesn't work out quite as planned. But I will keep you posted!
I didn't get to my new milker yesterday, the pigs had other plans. We ended up getting creative and installing a new feeder for them. Here's a quick video of the little critters happily eating.
Welcome to the Farm Journal — a place where we share stories, updates, and everyday moments from life here at Figs Farm Life.
We're just getting started - so keep checking back for updates!
I have been milking our cow every day since she calved May 14, 2025. Twice daily until September, and then just once a day. We started milking by hand, but found out immediately that our cow Marble has very small back teats, almost impossible to milk by hand. We ordered a milk machine from a company in Canada, as it seemed good quality, and although expensive, not as expensive as ordering a good one from the US.
It's a great machine, but cleaning it is not a joy... I am currently taking the entire thing apart and scrubbing after every use, which takes me over half an hour. Even though I scrub it, I can't see inside many of the parts, which bothers me a bit... it's so important to have it very clean, so nothing contaminates Marble's beautiful milk.
I joined facebook groups, and did some searches and came across the Surge Belly Milker. They're no longer being made, but you can find them online sometimes. You can buy complete refurbished setups from a supplier in the US - but I managed to find one online late last year. It's not in working order, so just ordered the parts to get it going in February.
Two days ago, the parts arrived - and TODAY IS THE DAY! I'm going to get it cleaned up, put together and tested with my vacuum pump! I'm hoping to try it out tomorrow morning with Marble. I will keep you posted on how it goes, and perhaps I'll even get a video.
TTFN - have a great day!
